The Link-Belt 100 RT is a 2-axle Rough Terrain crane with a maximum capacity of 100 US tons.

Packaging

The model comes in a Link-Belt branded box, and the model is contained within two expanded polystyrene trays.

There were no defects or missing parts on the review model.

A coloured instruction sheet is provided, which is mainly pictorial.  This describes some of the features of the model although there are no reeving diagrams.  A separate parts list sheet is included.

There is a little information about the real crane on the box, together with information about the model.

Detail

The undercarriage has the transmission and steering components detailed, and the wheels have nice large chunky tyres.  There are metal handrails and steps on the undercarriage, although it lacks tie-off points for the hooks when the crane is travelling.

The outrigger beams are single stage metal, with chevron graphics. The outrigger pistons show screw threads when extended, with nice pads on the bottom.

The crane body sits on a large toothed slewing ring and the operator's cab is nicely modelled with the grab rails being plastic.  Tiny graphics add detail.

The crane body is detailed with more tiny warning graphics.  The hand rails are metal and there are small beacon lights.  There are no hydraulic hoses running to the winches.

The counterweight is modelled as a solid block, and there are chevron graphics and tiny warning signs applied.

The main boom ram has a plastic jacket with an excellent colour match.  There is an enlarged moulding that accommodates a locking grub screw.

The boom has fairly simple detailing and at the boom head axles act as connection points for the fly jib and this represents the fixing points of the real crane.  However, they are loose and can go out of position sideways easily.  A spooling drum is fitted to one side of the boom.

The telescope sections are engineered well.  The top section is very thin because of the thicknesses of the telescope sections.

The fly jib is made in two separable parts and each one is metal.  They connect with tiny brass nuts and bolts for which tools are supplied.   The ratchet mechanism has been modelled in the casting but it is non-functional.

All sheaves on the model are metal.

Two hooks are supplied.  One is a single line block and the other is multi sheave for heavy lifting.  They are very nicely made.

A metal Link-Belt load plate is included.

Features

Both axles can be independently steered to a good angle and so the steering modes of the real crane can be reproduced.

The outriggers pull out, and the pistons screw down. No spreader plates are included but the range of travel supports the model wheels-free.

A cabinet on the carrier has an opening door and it reveals interior detail.

The crane rotates well after some initial stickiness.

The counterweight is removable to minimise the load during transport.

The boom ram has some stiffness but it also has a locking system using a grub screw and key.  It appears that is designed to be operated only at certain extensions as the piston has indentations.  It all works well enough but is not as good as systems with metal jackets.

The boom has one locking point on each telescopic section.

The fly jib can be carried on the side of the boom or attached to the boom head.

The operator's cab can tilt a small amount, although tilting it too far pulls out the piston from the ram jacket under the cab.

Quality

This a well made model by NZG, with a high metal content

The paintwork is nice and the applied graphics are very sharp.

Price

It is fully priced.

Overall

This is a nice quality Link-Belt model by NZG with some very nice detailing such as the tiny graphics.  Aspects of the functionality could be better such as the main boom ram which is not as good as a full metal system.
