The Volvo EC220D His a crawler excavator in the 20 tonnes weight class.   This version of the 220 is aimed at less well developed international markets.

Packaging

The model comes in a Volvo picture box with the model held within two separate expanded polystyrene trays and protected with clear plastic sheets.

There were no missing parts or defects on the review model.

There are a few technical details about the real machine printed on the box, together with a line drawing.

Detail

The undercarriage has some simple detailing and the track frames lhave steps provided, but there are no working rollers.  The metal track pads are thin with bolt heads indicated.

Underneath the body there is also some detailing.

The cab has a detailed interior, and outside there is a metal grab rail and mirror assembly.  There is a large wiper, and a beacon light and metal grab rail at the rear.  Detailing of the cab sides is very good.

Behind the cab the side panels have excellent etched grilles, and the graphics are very sharp. The counterweight is shaped well, with warning graphics and the Volvo name is embossed.  On top there are nicely textured surfaces, with more etched grilles.  On the opposite side to the cab is a metal grab rail and two more metal mirrors.

Hydraulic hoses run to the twin boom cylinders which have nice detailing on the jackets.  Pipes and hoses run along the boom and these are very good.

The bucket is a simple casting, with well defined teeth.

Features

The tracks roll but they are stiff, and they are tensioned by spring-loaded idlers.

Rotation is smooth and precise.

The boom, stick and bucket have a very good range of movement, particularly when digging at depth.  The cylinders are stiff and hold any pose.

Quality

The model has a high metal content and is robust and well made.

The paintwork and graphics are very good.

Price

It is reasonable value for the high quality.

Overall

This EC220D model is high quality with the detailing being particularly pleasing.  It goes well with other suitable models including as a transport load.

Footnotes
