The SAR was the first Kenworth truck designed and built in Australia and the first truck rolled off the production line in Bayswater, Victoria in July 1975. The SAR (Short-bonnet, Australian Right-hand drive) truck was specifically designed to handle the punishing outback heat and the massive trailer combinations while remaining within the strict Australian legal length limits.

The Kenworth Legend SAR was a limited-edition truck built and on display at the 2021 Brisbane Truck Show to celebrate Kenworth’s 50th anniversary in Australia. This truck, production number 001 was named “Son of Nugget” drawing back on Kenworth’s unique heritage of the limited edition of the 30 “Gold Nugget” trucks that were released in 1984. Kenworth sold 750 of the limited-edition Legend SAR Trucks in a single day order period.

This model has been produced in a run of 750 of the “Son of Nugget” Truck.

Packaging

The model comes in a Kenworth branded box and is contained within taped together trays.

There were no missing parts or defects on the review model.

A special Legend SAR brochure is included, together with a numbered collector card.

Detail

The Kenworth W 900 Prime Mover is a 6x4 long distance tractor with a sleepover cab.  The chassis is very detailed underneath with an excellent representation of the transmission and suspension.  The prominent exhaust system is modelled.  The tyres are different on the front and rear axles but they do not have branding. There are soft mud flaps throughout and the rear ones have tiny Kenworth badges.

The cab modelling is first class with excellent chrome work all round, including the exhaust stacks.   There is an aerial and lights and air horns on the roof.  The graphics are sharp and to a high standard including very thin pin striping.

The bonnet is highly decorated and is shaped around the air intakes.  Under the bonnet is a detailed engine with various pipes and hoses modelled.  The front wheel arches are highly decorated and there are very nice 50th Anniversary badges on each side of the truck.

Inside, the cab is very good with a detailed instrument console which appears to replicate a wood finish, and Kenworth printed on the seat backs.

Behind the cab, there is more high quality artwork. The detail continues with three coiled lines for connection to a trailer and they have storage connections for when a trailer is not connected.  There are excellent non-slip walking surfaces.  At the rear the lights have plastic lenses.

A variety of road signs are provided separately and these can be stuck on.

Features

The front wheels on the Kenworth steer to a good angle with the steering being notched rather than variable.

There is working sprung suspension on all axles.

The bonnet tilts forward and poses tilted.

The cab doors can be opened and inside the seats have an air ride action and can be moved up and down.

The ‘fifth wheel’ on the tractor works and is operated with a spring loaded lever to secure a trailer in position.  It can also be adjusted longitudinally.

Quality

This is a high quality model with plastic used in a very limited way.

The paint work and graphics are excellent.

Price

It is a very high quality model which delivers good value overall.

Overall

This is a fitting tribute to an historic truck.  The detailing is excellent and the quality of the artwork is outstanding.
