The Volvo EC500 is a crawler excavator in the 50 tonnes weight class.   It is aimed at mining and heavy construction applications.

Packaging

The model comes in a Volvo branded box with the model held within two separate trays and protected with clear plastic sheets.

There were no missing parts or defects on the review model.

There is no information about model or real machine.

Detail

The undercarriage is simply modelled with the body having screw locations covered with plates. The track frames have steps, with the bottom rollers modelled in the casting.  The top rollers rotate but the rivets would have looked better painted.  The metal track pads are thin with bolt heads indicated.

The cab has a detailed interior, and outside there is a plastic grab rail and mirror assembly.  There are large wipers, and a beacon light and metal grab rail at the rear.  There is a sharp Volvo graphic on the side.

Behind the cab the side panel has a textured grille, and panel handles are represented. The counterweight has warning graphics and the Volvo name is embossed.  On top there are textured surfaces, with plastic railings.

Hydraulic hoses run to the twin boom cylinders which have detailing on the jackets.  Pipes and hoses run along the boom and stick and these are very good.  The connection rivets would have looked better painted.

The bucket is a decent casting, with well defined teeth.

Features

The tracks roll but they are stiff, and they are tensioned by spring-loaded idlers.

Rotation is smooth and precise.

The boom, stick and bucket have a very good range of movement, particularly when digging at depth.  The cylinders are stiff and hold a pose.

Quality

The model has a high metal content and is well made.

The paintwork and graphics are very good.

Price

It is moderate value.

Overall

This model of the EC500 is good looking and feels heavy in the hand.  The detailing and functionality are very good.  As with all excavator models a removable bucket would have been a plus point.
