This model of the Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 in Mammoet
colours represents the real crane built in 2015.
Packaging
The model comes in an outer shipping carton which protects a
box with a Mammoet branded sleeve. Inside, the box
is high quality black foam with the many parts wrapped
in soft paper.
The model is very detailed and delicate and has to be handled with care
removing it from the box. The instructions give some
advice on removing packaging.
There were no defects or missing parts on the review
model.
A high quality manual is included. It starts with a reprint
of the original machine specifications. The instructions
for the model are top quality and detailed and show every
aspect of the assembly and features.
Also included is a Mammoet Collector Card.
Assembly is straightforward, with care required to
handle some of the very small parts and pins. High
quality tools are included to assemble and operate the
model.
To prove the attention to accuracy stickers are provided
to be able to add the Mammoet phone number to the boom
ram jackets reflecting a redecoration of the real crane.
Detail
The crane carrier is very highly detailed. Underneath,
the chassis has good detail with the transmission
and suspension elements modelled, including tiny
steering rams. The wheels are excellent
with yellow nut indicators and air inflation valves.
The tyres set a new standard with the detailed branding
in the sidewalls.
The driving cab looks great and the interior detail is good. The wipers and mirrors
are very fine, and there is a realistic license plate.
Behind the cab the detailing of the engine area is top
notch, with fans visible under the grilles and opening
hatches reveal a detailed engine made up of numerous
components.
The exhaust pipe has an opening cap.
There are thin rubber skirts above the wheels, very thin
metal deck access ladders and at the rear small metal
folding wheel chocks fit
into special holders. Also at the rear the light
clusters are very good. Two display options exist at the
back using either a spare wheel or a tool
box.
The outrigger beams are excellent and tiny locking bolts
are included, and
the decoration is great. The
pistons have a smooth external appearance and the metal pads are finely crafted.
Heavy spreader plates with lifting points are included.
The crane body structure rests on a convincing looking
heavy toothed turntable.
The operator's cab is excellent with fine quality grab
rails and lights and the interior detail includes a highlighted instrument cluster.
The exhaust pipe has an opening cover, and
under opening panels there are detailed engine and other components
including hoses.
The counterweight tray is complete out of the box and
has first class hydraulics detailing. Handrails are metal
and there are mesh floors.
The twin hydraulic cylinders for the boom are all metal
components. Tiny
magnetic cover plates are provided to cover the grub
screws that lock the extension.
The four stage telescopic boom has a great
profile with the
locking pin positions in the first boom section having
separate covers which can be placed when posing the
model. The many tiny details on the boom are a
revelation. At the boom head there are free-rolling metal
pulleys and tie-off points including a tiny one for the hoist
limit
chain.
The Y-Guy arrangement is also finely modelled and has
detailing to match the quality of the rest of the model.
The pendant bars are very thin and there are excellent
detachable hydraulic hose connections.
Five different sizes of hook block are supplied. These
are all metal and top quality.
A lifting appliance for the counterweight blocks is
included, and also a pair of lifting chains. An
excellent load plate has the unique production number
for the model on one side and a copy of the Liebherr
machine plate on the other. It also has removable
lifting eyes.
Features
The carrier has fully sprung suspension on each axle and
separate steering allows all the modes of the real crane
to be replicated.
The carrier cab doors open widely.
Three covers are removable on top of the engine.
Wheel chocks are hinged, and can be flat packed for
storage. Four deck ladders
can be rotated and deployed.
At the rear a spare tyre can be carried, or a toolbox
fitted which has an opening door.
On each side there is a tiny opening flap which gives
access to the outrigger beam controls. There is also an
opening cupboard on each side.
The two-stage outrigger beams extend smoothly and can be
locked in place in the 50% and 100% locking positions.
The pistons are lowered by
unscrewing. Tiny locking bolts can be utilised on
the pads. It is possible to display the model
wheels-free, although the manual recommends this pose is
not used for the very long term.
The crane rotates very smoothly.
The operator's cab tilts and holds any pose well.
The cab door
slides open and shut. There is a sliding foot plate
under the cab. Two cab windscreens are provided,
one for the closed position and
another for the open operating position.
There is an opening cover on each side of the crane
body. Highly detailed engine and other parts are
modelled together with excellent hoses.
The counterweight can be configured like the real crane
and can be placed on the carrier deck to simulate
self-assembly. It is also possible to strip down
the counterweight tray into component parts and also to
accurately simulate the attachment process.
The counterweight tray has a variable position with an
adjustable radius.
The boom lifting cylinders are perfectly smooth in operation
and they are locked at any extension by tightening a
discrete grub screw at the top of each cylinder jacket
using the special tool supplied.
The telescopic boom extensions pull out very smoothly
and the spring loaded locking pins work well.
They are able to lock each section at the 46%, 92% and
100% positions of the real crane, with a lock at 0% on
the first section.
The Y-Guy arrangement can be detached from the crane and
each beam has useable lifting eyes. The system folds open and the winches
in each arm have positive
brakes so they can be tensioned up tight. There
are clippable transport stands.
To access the main winch a magnetic side panel is
removed. The winch drums can operated using a special
tool and if required it can powered by an electric
screwdriver to raise and lower the hook. The brake
is spring loaded with positive action so it will hold a load.
The hook blocks have rotating hooks and working spring-loaded
safety latches. The 7 sheave block has detachable
side weights.
Quality
The model is very well made with a very high metal
content. A large number of parts has been used and
some of them are absolutely tiny in order to faithfully
represent detail. As a consequence the model is
delicate and needs to be handled with respect.
The paintwork and graphics are excellent.
Price
This top quality model comes at a price, but it is
good value and it is
more likely than many to hold value in the longer term.
Overall
YCC has achieved a new high standard for a mobile crane
model and at the time of writing this is the best model
ever reviewed by Cranes Etc. Superb detailing and
excellent functionality set the benchmark.
