The Komatsu PC8000 is one of the largest
hydraulic mining shovels in the world. It has an
operational weight of around 750 tonnes.
The version modelled here is the electric powered
version.
Packaging
The packaging is a huge size and consists of an outer
sleeve enclosing two trays, with the model wrapped in a
plastic bag inside.
There were no missing parts on the review model but a
part was loose in the box and was easily re-glued.
There is no information about the model although the
design of the upper tray looks like there was space
provision for a brochure. There is some information about the real machine
on the box sleeve.
Detail
This is a large and extremely heavy model weighing
around 7.8 kg.
The detail is fairly simple underneath, but the metal
crawler track links have got very nicely cast individual
links. The track frames are of heavy build, but
are fairly simple, and they do have working rollers.
Between the tracks at one end is a cable reel assembly
for the electric power supply. It has plastic parts but looks good as the colour match is
fine.
At the rear of the body the counterweight is suitably
massive with the Komatsu name crisply applied. The
many side grilles look very good, and a mixture of
materials is used. The access stair and the many
handrails are all metal and they look good. Mesh
walkways are also nicely modelled.
The cab is a plastic part, but the colour match is
excellent so it does not show. Inside there are
seats detailed, and there is a textured walkway surface
outside.
The roof of the body has large plain areas because this
is an electric machine, and the plastic covers to the
engine compartment are slightly off colour. A
small telescopic winch is modelled in plastic.
To the side of the boom area there are some very nicely
modelled grilles.
The boom and stick are very substantial pieces, and they
impress because of the very good detailing of the
hydraulics. Flexible black plastic hoses are used,
with yellow pipe runs adding a busy look. The
covers to the pinning points are also very nicely
represented. The lifting eyes are properly formed
with holes.
The beefy hydraulic rams have plastic jackets with
hydraulics detailing.
The big shovel is a suitably massive part and the wear
plate and tooth detailing is excellent. However
the inside back plate of the shovel is plastic and it
shows as the colour match is a bit off.
Features
The tracks were tight on the review model although they
could be rolled by hand. They may settle down if
worked a little.
The electric cable reel rotates smoothly and a good
length of cable can be run off.
Rotation is solid without any rocking, and just the
occasional sticky patches.
The rams controlling the boom and stick are extremely
stiff, but will hold any pose set, and the range of
movement seems good. The shovel splits open and
this works well.
The small winch on the roof rotates and the jib can be
raised up and down, but in other respects is
non-functional.
Quality
This is a decent quality model overall with some
aspects of the finish not the best. Plastic has generally
been used appropriately with a good colour match to
metal parts in some places but not everywhere.
The paint and graphics are very good.
Price
It is reasonable value given the huge size.
Overall
This is a long-awaited model from Bymo, and it is good
that production versions have finally been released.
It is hugely impressive overall, and only some aspects
of the final finish could have been better on the review
model. In reality, as a giant model, it dominates.
Footnotes
This model was produced in diesel and electric versions.
