The Komatsu PC8000 is one of the largest
hydraulic mining excavators in the world. It has an
operating weight of around 750 tonnes.
The version modelled
here is the diesel powered
backhoe version.
Packaging
The
model was delivered in an outer shipping carton. The packaging
consists of an outer sleeve enclosing two trays.
There were no missing parts on the review model.
It arrived without damage other than some handrails were
bent slightly out of alignment which was easily
corrected.
There is some information about the real machine on the
box sleeve, and there are no instructions for the model.
Detail
This is a large and extremely heavy model
weighing over 8 kg.
The detailing
under the body is very good, and the metal
crawler track links have got very nicely cast individual
links. The track frames are of heavy build, but
are fairly simple. They do have working rollers.
Large track drive motors are at one end of the frames.
At the rear of the body the counterweight is suitably
massive with the Komatsu name crisply applied. The
many side grilles look very good. The access stair and
all the
handrails are metal and they look good. Mesh
walkways are also nicely modelled.
The cab is a plastic part with an excellent colour match. Inside there are
seats detailed, and there is a textured walkway surface
outside.
The roof of the body has equipment boxes modelled in
plastic and there is good looking fire suppression
equipment. Grilles in the roof are formed by graphics.
The boom and stick are very substantial pieces, and they
have very good detailing of the hydraulics. Flexible
black plastic hoses are used, with yellow pipe runs
adding a busy look. The covers to the pinning points
are also very nicely represented.
The big
hydraulic rams have
hydraulics detailing.
The bucket is a suitably massive part and the
wear plate and tooth detailing is excellent.
Features
The tracks
roll well if they are able to grip a rough surface.
They are tensioned in the usual way, and there are
working rollers top and bottom.
Rotation is solid without any rocking, and just the
occasional sticky patches.
The rams controlling the boom
were a little loose on the review model but some poses
could be set. The range of movement is generally
very good although the boom cannot be lowered fully and
some visible piston is left revealed.
The access stair and two emergency ladders can be
lowered fully.
Quality
This is a nice quality model with a high metal content
other than in some areas of detail.
The paint and graphics are very good.
Price
It is reasonable value given the huge size.
Overall
It is good to see the backhoe version of this machine
finally appear. It is huge and very heavy, and
looks very good. Some of the functionality is not
top notch, but good poses can be set.
Footnotes
This model appeared in July 2024.
