The RTG RT 21 T Pile Driver is designed to install sheet piles.

RTG is part of the Bauer Group.

Packaging

The model comes in an RTG branded box enclosing expanded polystyrene trays.

There were no missing parts on the review model. Two ropes that are part of the sledge mechanism were not secured to the leader, and it was a non-trivial fix.

No instructions were supplied with the review model.

There is some information about the real machine printed on the box.

Detail

There are good quality metal crawler tracks with detailed pads but there are no working rollers on the track frames.  The drive sprockets and frames are detailed, including tiny steps.

The cab has an excellent fine mesh guard on the roof, and  but the interior is good with the controls modelled. Small graphics on the cab door give an authentic appearance.  Casting detailing on the body includes panel handles, and there are small and detailed graphics.

At the back the counterweight is modelled of separate slabs.  There is also a beacon light at the rear.

At the front there is a metal ladder.  There is a textured walkway on the roof and the top of the engine enclosure has a mesh grille, and fan enclosures are detailed within the casting.

Hoses run to the leader assembly, and the support for the leader is a complex piece of modelling.  The hydraulic ram jackets are plastic with a very good colour match.  Hoses run to the top of the leader and down to the vibrator.

The leader is metal, and at the top the auxiliary winch assembly is modelled well, with a small metal hook.

The sledge has tiny metal pulleys, and the vibrator is very detailed.  A chain is provided for lifting piles.

Two interlocking metal sheet piles are included.  They are very good, but would have looked better in a dark or rust colour.

Features

The tracks can be rolled but they are stiff. They are mounted on extendible frames which can be pinned at various extensions.

The model rotates smoothly.

The leader can be rotated from a transport position to a vertical position, and can also be lifted up.  The telescoping leader works well, and the leader assembly rotates on a bearing to allow flexible pile positioning.

The vibrator can be pinned to the sledge or left off for transportation.

The counterweight can be attached, or left off for transport.

The auxiliary winch assembly rotates and can be moved between transport and operating positions.  The winch can be operated, although not easily, and there is only a limited length of rope available.

The engine side panel can be tilted open to enable additional cooling ventilation.

Quality

This is a high quality model with plastic used appropriately.

The paint and graphics are mostly excellent.

Price

It is good value for a complex model.

Overall

This piling machine model is complex with some intricate functionality.  The standard of detailing is also high, and overall it is an excellent model setting aside the lack of instructions and unattached ropes on the review model.
