The Liebherr R 938 Crawler Excavator is a machine in the 40 tonne class.

This model is of the machine displayed at ConExpo 2020 which was decorated to celebrate 50 years of Liebherr operating in the United States of America.

Packaging

The model comes in a special Liebherr-branded box with the model packed within good quality foam rubber.

There were no defects or missing parts on the review model.

No instructions are provided and there is no information about the real machine.  A mirror has to be fitted which is easy to do.

Detail

The tracks are metal and good quality and the pads are triple grouser.  They are mounted on good track frames with some intricate detailing of the bottom rollers, although they are non-functioning.  The drive sprocket is plastic.

The cab is metal with plastic grab rails and the windows have nice seals and frames. The interior detail is very good.

The detailing of the body is very good with painted panel handles and graphics to represent grilles.  The plastic mirror is not silvered which is a pity and the grab rail is plastic too.   The decoration of the body is really nice with the graphics seeming to be an accurate representation of the real machine at ConExpo.  There are metal handrails around the top of the body.  Hydraulic hoses run to the top surface of the boom.

The boom and stick hydraulics are very good with soft plastic hoses and stiff plastic pipe arrays.  Connections of the members are made with small brass rivets.  The Stars and Stripes graphics look great and one difference to the real machine is that the underside is white on the model and Liebherr yellow on the real machine.

The metal bucket is a relatively simple casting.

Features

The tracks are stiff and can be turned by hand and they are tensioned with spring-loaded idlers in the track frames.

It rotates and it was very smooth on the review model.

The range of movement of the boom and stick is very good.

The bucket has a full range of movement in and out.

The aerial on the cab folds down to reduce the headroom in transport mode.

Quality

This is a solid and robust model which is mostly metal and relatively heavy, with an appropriate use of plastic.

The paintwork and graphics are of a high standard.

Price

The model was reasonably priced for a special limited edition.

Overall

This is a special looking model which is a nice limited edition model for Liebherr fans.  As an excavator model it is straightforward and robust.

Footnotes

The model was produced in a limited edition of 600 pieces for the ConExpo Exhibition in March 2020.
