The Liebherr RE 25 M is a dual mode excavator capable of travelling on road using its tyres, or on rails using the rail bogies.  It weighs around 25 tonnes.

Packaging

The box is Liebherr-branded.  Inside the model is wrapped in foam rubber.

There were no missing parts on the review model but the bar for supporting the grab during travel was broken off.  It was easily glued into place.

There are no instructions provided and the only assembly required is to fit mirrors.

Detail

The underside of the machine has the transmission to each axle modelled.  The double-tyred wheels are detailed and they have a good tread pattern.  At each end the rail wheels are plastic and detailed, and they have tiny light plates in front of each rail wheel.  The hydrostatic motors on each rail axle are modelled.

The outrigger pads are also plastic.  Metal bumper bars are positioned at end.

The large cab has lights and a mirror, and the interior detail is good.  The body casting is good and it is enhanced by painting of panel handles and the application of very many small graphics such as warning signs.

The modelling of the hydraulics is very good with soft plastic hoses and pipes on the ram jackets.  More small graphics enhance the boom and although the rivets used are small, tiny friction rivets would have been even better.

Two tools are provided, a clamshell grab and pallet forks.  The clamshell is metal with a plastic connection.  The metal pallet forks are attached to a plastic tilt rotator.

A section of track is provided and it has metal rails and plastic sleepers (ties).

Features

It rolls well on its road tyres and the steering works well and turns to a very good  angle. The steering axle pivots significantly.

The rail bogies can be lowered and the machine can travel on the supplied track.

The outriggers can be lowered and the pivoting pads can rest on the sleepers.

The model rotates well although on the review model the cab slightly snagged on the rear bumper bar.

The movement of the boom and stick is very good and the cylinders have enough stiffness to hold any pose.

The clamshell opens and closes well and it rotates also.  It can be unpinned from the quick connector.

The pallet forks do not fit to the quick connector as the holes for pin do not line up.  It can be made to fit by cutting a notch in the tilt rotator with a modelling knife, but it is disappointing this issue was noticed during the model's development.

Quality

It is generally well made.

The paintwork is very good and the many warning graphics add realism.

Price

It is moderate value.

Overall

This is a good looking model with its detailed appearance being the standout aspect.  Most of the functionality is very good but it is disappointing that out of the box the pallet forks do not fit.

Footnotes
