The Bauer BG 28 H Drilling Rig is a flexible machine used for a variety of foundation
engineering
tasks. It is a Premium Line machine in the Bauer
range.
Packaging
The model comes in a nice quality Bauer-branded box with the model
packed within
black foam rubber.
There were no defects or missing parts on
the review model.
There is no information about the real machine. A
comprehensive instruction sheet describes the assembly.
Detail
The undercarriage has metal tracks mounted on frames
which have no working rollers. Plastic steps are fixed
to the track frames.
The cab has metal grab rails and a plastic roof protection
screen. There is an unsilvered plastic mirror, and
a windscreen wiper. The walkway outside the cab is
metal with a textured surface.
A metal ladder is mounted on the side of the body, and the
graphics and paintwork are to a high standard. At the rear the
counterweight is in separate parts. On the other
side of the body the grilles look very good with painted
openings. On the roof there are textured surfaces
and the exhaust
pipe is metal. The handrails are plastic and
they look good.
Soft hydraulic hoses run from the front of the machine
to the rotary drive. The mast support structure is
robustly modelled. The hydraulic ram jackets are
plastic and the colour match is slightly off compared to
the metal parts.
The mast is modelled well with very good detailing.
The winches look realistic and metal sheaves are used
throughout. The auxiliary line has a small metal
hook.
The kelly bar is metal with a plastic cap and the
drilling bucket is metal also. The rotary drive is
excellent including springs to represent those on the
real machine. Also metal is the casing driver.
Features
The tracks roll well on a rough surface and they are
mounted on extendible track frames.
The model can be posed with an accurate transport width.
The steps on the track frames can be removed, the cab
grab rail removed and the access platform can be slid
under the cab. The mirror can fold in towards the
cab and the light bar at the top of the cab can be slid
to a transport position.
The transport height can also be represented by folding
the handrails and removing the exhaust pipe.
The ends of the mast can be folded to reduced the
transport length.
The transport weight can be removed by removing the
counterweight.
The top of the kelly bar unclips allowing it to be
withdrawn from the rotary drive meaning realistic transport loads are possible.
However, the drilling bucket is not removable from the
kelly bar.
The body rotates smoothly and without any rocking.
The mast is movable and can be posed in transport
mode or erected. The hydraulic rams are stiff and
will hold any pose.
Three winches can be operated using supplied keys.
One controls the movement of the sledge up and down the
mast, and the model is supplied reeved for this. A
second winch controls the raising and lowering of the kelly
bar, and a third controls the auxiliary hoist.
The kelly bar and drilling bucket can be rotated, and
the bucket flap opens.
Quality
This is solid and heavy model with a high metal
content.
The paintwork and graphics are high quality.
Price
The model is reasonable value.
Overall
Conrad has made an excellent model of the BG 28 H for
Bauer. It is highly functional and represents the
real machine very well.
