Comment on this model.
The Atlas 350MH is a machine designed for material
handling applications.
Depending on configuration it weighs between 33 and 36 tonnes.
The modelled version appears to have a scaled 8.7m loading
boom and 6.9m stick. It is fitted with an orange
peel grab.
Packaging
The model box is Atlas-branded but it does not have any
information about the real machine. Inside the model
is contained within expanded polystyrene trays.
There were no missing parts
or defects on the review model.
The only assembly required is to fit two mirrors.
Detail
The underside of the machine is good with the transmission
to each axle modelled. The double-tyred plastic wheels
are detailed and they have a good tread pattern.
The undercarriage is metal with plastic outrigger beams
and separate pads and the rivet connections are very
small and hard to see. However the real machine is
usually seen with integral unpinned pads.
The cab is plastic with silvered lights and dark tinted
windows which obscure the detail inside a little.
The elevating mechanism has visible brass rivets and the
cable band is nice soft plastic. The two external
mirrors do not have silvered surfaces.
The body
casting has some detailing and there are painted panel
handles and small graphic warning
signs. There are textured surfaces
on top and the various grilles are formed well.
The modelling of the hydraulics is very good with soft plastic
hoses and silver pipes on the boom and stick, and the
cylinder jackets have external pipes too. The rivets used are small,
but visible.
The orange peel grab is plastic and it looks convincing.
Features
It rolls well on its tyres. The steering also works
well and turns to a good angle, and the steering axle also
oscillates.
The outriggers can be lowered and the pads pivot. They
will hold the machine wheels-free.
The cab elevates smoothly.
The model rotates well.
The movement of the boom and stick is very good and the
cylinders have enough stiffness to hold any pose.
However as the tool is fixed it prevents the model
posing in a realistic transport mode.
The orange peel grab rotates on the connection and can
swing in two
dimensions. It opens and closes smoothly.
Quality
As usual for Conrad it is a robust and well made model.
There is a little more plastic than usual but on the
whole it does not detract from the look of the model.
The paintwork is very good with nice sharp graphics.
Price
It is reasonable value.
Overall
This is a model which has good engineering as its
hallmark. The brass rivets would have looked
better painted or as friction rivets and it would have
been good if the grab was removable. Overall it
looks good in the Atlas colour scheme.
Footnotes
The model first appeared at the Nuremberg Toy Fair
in 2013.
