This is a model of a MAN TGS 4-wheel drive 2-axle tipper
with an unbranded lifting arm which is based on a
Palfinger machine.
Packaging
The Conrad-branded box contains a folded foam rubber
sheet which protects the model well and it had no defects or missing parts.
There are no instructions supplied, but assembly is
limited to fixing door mirrors, a roof aerial and the hook
on the Palfinger. There is no information about the real
vehicle.
Detail
Looking underneath, the chassis is good. The
4-wheel drive transmission is replicated and the rear
axle suspension is plastic and satisfactory. The
steering mechanism is purely functional rather than
accurate. The wheels look smart with the same
tyres used all around.
The MAN cab is marked TGS 18.440 and is typical Conrad
quality with the lights having plastic lenses, and there
are nice details such as steps and door handles. Inside
detail is simple. The beacon lights on the roof look
good but they seem on the large size. Under the cab is a plastic engine block.
The tipper body is all metal with good discreet tailgate
hinges. Towards the rear the plastic wheel arches
are good, and there are painted lights and a towing
hitch.
The Palfinger loading crane has plastic outrigger beams
which are rather too
flexible, and the pads are mounted on
screw threads. The arm sections are metal with
plastic telescopic sections. A plastic hook fixes
to the end. There are no graphics on the loading
arm.
Features
The steering has an excellent range of movement, and the
rear axle floats to provide a degree of suspension.
The cab tilts forward about 45° and can maintain a
tilted pose.
The tipper body tilts to around 45°, and the
tailgate opens and closes. Both sides of the
tipper can fold down and this is implemented very well.
The outriggers of the loading crane extend, and the pads
can be screwed down. It rotates fully and the arm
can be unfolded and the two telescopic stages extended to
reach a maximum height of about 23cm. The hook can be
attached at one of two positions.
Quality
It is a well made and strong model with limited use of
plastic. The paintwork is very nice and the very
few graphics are implemented well.
Price
It is good value for the functionality offered.
Overall
This is a likable small truck from Conrad with a very good
range of features which work well. It is is not the
most highly detailed model but looks good in its blue
and red colours and is has enough to be highly
recommended.
Footnotes
The model appeared in red and blue in summer 2011.
