This truck is a Western Star 4900 SF Day Cab Tandem Tractor with a 40' Dry Goods sea Container.

Packaging

The packaging consists of a cardboard outer shipping carton which encloses a very high quality drawer-style tray within a picture sleeve.

There were no missing parts on the review model.  The exhaust stacks were detached and had to be re-glued into place

Included with the model are two exhaust pipe extensions which have to be added.  The box has some details of the real truck.  Tractor is spelt as 'Trator' throughout.

Detail

The chassis has the engine, gearbox and transmission detailed in plastic, but it looks good.  The chromed tanks and boxes have black highlights, and there are soft mud flaps.   The plastic wheels are detailed and there are different tyres on the various axle types.

The front grille is very good and there is a tiny Western Star badge at the top.  The lights and front bumper look nice also, although there is no number plate as this is a generic truck.

Around the cab the chrome work is very good and the mirrors are plastic. The steps are textured.  The exhaust stacks are very detailed and inside the cab the seats have the Western Star logo printed on.

There is an array of lights and horns on the roof.

The trailer is mainly metal with a good structure, and the axles are nicely detailed.  The wheels look good. Red and white highlighting is applied around the trailer edges.  The rear lights are painted.

The trailer has fixing points for a 40' container, but the casting does not provide the same for both ends of 20f' containers.

The container is an all plastic part, and is therefore lightweight.  It looks good and has small graphics applied to add to the realism.  The rear door bolts are highlighted.

Features

The tractor steering has a limited range of movement, and the model rolls well.

The hood tilts forward to about 45° and can pose in a tilted position.  The engine underneath is detailed.

The landing legs on the trailer can be folded down.

The trailer kingpin can be fitted into 4 different positions.

The container has opening doors and they open to an excellent angle.

Quality

This model is nice quality with plastic is used for the container and on the Western Star chassis.

The paintwork and graphics are to a high standard.

Price

It is good value.

Overall

Diecast Masters has produced another well presented US truck model.  It looks very good.  A metal container would have given the model a solid feel.
