The Caterpillar 995 is Caterpillar's largest mining wheel loader.  It weighs around 247 tonnes, and 300 tonnes fully loaded.

Packaging

The model comes in robust packaging.  There are two layers of outer shipping carton which contains a tin which is protected by expanded polystyrene trays.  The tin is high quality and includes pictures and details about the real machine.

The review model had no missing parts or defects.

There is no information about the model.

Detail

The underside has decent detailing with the transmission modelled.  The rear plate is plastic. The huge tyres have a good tread pattern and they are mounted on plastic wheels with a detailed outside face and hollow inner faces.  There is no branding on the tyres.

At the rear the radiator grille is plastic, and the counterweight is suitably massive.  The handrails are metal and thin.  The rear folding access stair is entirely of soft plastic including the handrails which lowers the quality feel of the model a little.  Small graphics add detail.

On top of the engine bay the huge exhaust stacks are plastic, with decent proper holes.  Walkways have a textured surface, and there is red fire suppression equipment.

The cab is metal and detailed.  It has various beacon lights and matt silvered mirrors.  There is an operator in the cab and it is not removable.

Detail at the pivot point includes the steering rams and transmission.  However, there are no hydraulic hoses visible.

The front axle detailing is very good and there are stepping plates modelled.

The hydraulic rams are substantial with nice soft hydraulic hoses.

The loader arms are heavy and the connection rivets are painted.  Tiny graphics add detail.

The bucket has a very nice structure and detailed teeth.

Features

It rolls very smoothly on the big wheels.  The oscillation of the rear axle is very good.

Steering across the pivot point has an angle of around 30° and it rolls well when turning because the wheels spin independently.

The bucket cut angle is very good with a decent carry angle.   The lift height is very good and the tipping angle is good.

At the rear the fold down ladder with its articulated handrails works well.

Quality

It is a very good quality model with a reasonably high metal content.

The paintwork is very good and the graphics are sharp.

Price

It is a very large model and is very fully priced.

Overall

This is a very modest update to the previous 994K model released in 2017.  It is impressive due to its size and would match well with related mining models.

Footnotes
