The Wirtgen 220 SM 3.8 is a Surface Mining Machine with an operational weight around 59 tonnes.  It is used for surface mining in softer materials such as coal.

Packaging

The model comes in a Wirtgen branded box and is enclosed between expanded polystyrene trays. 

The review model had no defects or missing parts. 

The model comes with a bag containing a couple of parts which have to be fitted.  Spare track links are also included.  A sheet is included which describes the main features of the model pictorially.

There is no information about the real machine.

Detail

The small metal tracks are finely detailed, and they are mounted on small frames with the drive sprockets having detailed faces.  Hydraulic hoses run to the frames from the body. 

Underneath the model the mining drum is large with finely crafted silver tipped metal picks.  The side skirts are metal and there are rubber flaps on the rear skirt.

The large cab area lights and mirrors, and the interior is very good and includes a trainer's seat and a computer console. 

On one side two large exhaust pipes have realistic holes and various panels are detailed.  At the rear two large cooling fans are impressively modelled and they sit behind a fine mesh grille.

Metal handrails surround the top of the body, and there are excellent etched footways.  A detailed engine can be seen in the main well, and at the rear the steering mechanism for the rear legs.

Features

Each track unit has tracks which are stiff, but can be rotated by hand.  They are mounted on pivots at the end of legs which are extendible to adjust the height of the machine.  Each track frame can be steered.

The mining drum rotates and there is an adjustable side skirt on each side and a movable skirt at the rear.

The access stair at the front can be lowered and raised.

A side panel can be opened and hydraulic hoses are visible.

The rear fan enclosure can be opened and this allows two optional ballast weights to be can be added.

Quality

This is a high quality model with a high metal content.

The paint and graphics are excellent.

Price

It is reasonably priced.

Overall

This is an interesting and unusual model and it is of a high standard in keeping with all Wirtgen Group 1:50 scale models.  NZG has produced a finely engineered and detailed model.
