Comment on this model.

The Liebherr L 580 LogHandler is a specialist machine designed for moving logs.  It has an operating weight of around 33 tonnes.

Packaging

It comes in a standard Liebherr box, with the model contained between expanded polystyrene trays.

There were no defects or missing parts on the review model.

The model is complete out of the box and there are no instructions for it or information about the real machine.

Detail

Underneath, the transmission to both axles is modelled with the drive shafts being plastic.  The wheels have very good metal hubs with high quality tyres which appear to have a Michelin tread pattern.

At the rear the engine cover has very nice detailing with sharp graphics and nice grab rails and lights.  The rear wheel arches have good plastic farings with tool boxes on one side and some anti-slip surfacing.

The cab has some very fine gauge metal hand rails outside although the grab rails around the roof are plastic.  A windscreen wiper, mirrors, and a beacon light add detail.  Most of the access steps have a textured surface.

At the front the stump ram is modelled in metal.  The log loader arms are nicely modelled with the integral screen protection made in stiff plastic, and plenty of hydraulic hoses run to the grapple.  A nice touch is that the main ram pistons have protection modelled.

The grapple is mainly metal and nicely cast.  The two internal clamps are made of plastic.

Features

The rear axle has a significant amount of pivot so it can be posed running over very rough terrain with all tyres grounded.

The articulation to allow steering works well although it is fairly shallow with an angle of about 20° which is around half of the real machine.

At the front the stump ram raises and lowers a little.

The log loader reaches forward and back and raises and lowers.

The grapple rotates, and opens and closes.  It also has two internal clamps which fold down to help grip logs when the grapple is not full. However it is not removable so it is difficult to pose the model being transported.

Quality

This is a very good quality model with plastic used appropriately.

The paintwork and graphics are very good and give the model a quality feel.

Price

The L 580 is good value.

Overall

This is a nice model of a log loader with good functionality and nice detailing.  It is highly recommended.

Footnotes

The model was first presented at the BAUMA 2013 exhibition.
