Comment on this model.

The A 922 Rail Litronic is an excavator adapted for running on railway tracks and is used in railway construction and maintenance work.

It is a machine in the 20 tonne weight class.

Packaging

The box has the usual Liebherr style and the model and parts are securely packed within expanded polystyrene trays.

There were no defects or missing parts on the review model.

There is no information provided about the real machine or the model.

Detail

A piece of scale track is provided consisting of a solid plastic base which is moulded to represent sleepers and ballast, and a pair of metal rails.  The ends have connectors so pieces could be joined to make longer track sections.

Underneath, the detail level is simple with the transmission to the axles modelled.  The good quality wheels have inner tyres with a different tread pattern used to engage with the rail head and provide traction and braking.  The undercarriage is almost all metal including the outriggers and rail bogies.

The cab has very good detail inside including an additional passenger seat and nice controls.  Mirrors, wipers and lights add detail outside and the tiny graphics on the cab door are particularly good.

The body casting is very good and the side grilles are represented by graphics, and other small graphics add realism.  On top, paint is used to highlight various parts effectively.

The boom and stick are modelled well with small pinned connections.  Soft hydraulic hoses run to the rams.  Small graphics enhance the appearance.

The quick connector is metal as is the ditch cleaning bucket.

Features

The steering axle achieves a reasonable range of movement.  There is no axle oscillation.

The rail bogies can be raised and lowered, and the mechanism has a good stiffness.

The outriggers have a good range of movement and the pads tilt.

The model rotates.

Movement of the boom and stick is very good.  The model is stable on the tracks with the outriggers down, only wanting to tilt when reaching far out to the side.

The bucket can dig at an angle and is removable and reversible.

Quality

This is a high quality model with a high metal content.

The paintwork is very good and the graphics are excellent.

Price

It is good value for the high quality offered.

Overall

NZG has produced another very good quality rail excavator of a Liebherr machine.  It poses very well on the included track section.  Some additional tools or the road tyres for the third axle would have been interesting inclusions.

Footnotes

The model first appeared as a release for the Bauma Exhibition in 2016.
