The Joy 12CM27 is a continuous miner used for
underground applications with limited headroom. It
is a high-voltage electric machine, and the machine
weight is around 75 tonnes.
Joy is part of Komatsu Mining.
Packaging
It comes in a Komatsu / Joy branded box, which is
delivered inside an outer shipping carton. Inside, the
model is contained between a pair of factory-sealed expanded
polystyrene trays.
There were no defects or missing parts on the review model.
No assembly is required.
Detail
The metal tracks are delicately detailed, and there is
detail within the casting on the underside of the body
with black screw heads standing out against the orange
colour.
Detailing under the loader plate is very good. On each
side of the loader there are sharp Joy graphics, and the
rams that adjust the angle of the plate are modelled but
non-functional. Inside the loader there is wear
plate detailing, and the spinning loader arms are
modelled well.
The metal conveyor chain runs up through the body with
the chain a fixed part. At the rear there is a
nice rubber skirt detail where the conveyor has sideways
articulation.
The casting details on the body sides are excellent and
include tiny grab rails, with just paint thickness
taking the crispness off some of the details. Small graphics add to the
detailed appearance. At one end there is a
an enclosure with what looks like a fan, and at the
front there is a fine etched grille.
The cutter head boom is a suitably heavy looking piece
with some plastic elements to add detail. The
colour match between plastic and metal parts is very
good.
The cutter head is a detailed plastic part with highlighted picks.
As this is an electric machine it would have been nice
to include a length of supply cable.
Features
The tracks
turn easily enough by hand.
The loading plate is fixed in position. However, the
spinners can be rotated.
The boom can be raised and lowered, and the cutter head
can be rotated.
At the rear, the conveyor can be raised to a good
height, and the end part rotates from side to side.
Underneath, there is a small flap that opens.
Quality
This a nice quality scale model with a high metal
content.
The paint and graphics are very good.
Price
The
price is reasonable given metal content.
Overall
It is good to see a new model of an underground mining
machine, and this one is well executed by Weiss
Brothers. The high point is some of the very high
quality casting details.
