This model pairs a DAF XF 105 SSC 6x2
Tractor with a Nooteboom
3-axle OSDS semi low-loader. This trailer was
previously reviewed in
Nooteboom colours.
The model comes with a Vestas wind turbine hub and nose.
It is decorated in the colours of
Torben Rafn, the Danish heavy haulage specialist.
Packaging
The model comes in a WSI branded box and is contained in
an expanded polystyrene tray and held with a clear
plastic former. There were no defects on the review model
but one of the pull-out support brackets to extend the
deck width
was missing. WSI supplied the missing part
promptly.
There is no information about Torben Rafn or the real
vehicle, and no instructions are supplied
for the model. There are quite a few separate parts
supplied but most experienced collectors will have no problem
identifying how to fix the pieces.
Detail
The tractor unit is a DAF XF 105
6x2 Super Space Cab. The modelling of the chassis is to a high
standard, with realistic suspension and transmission
elements. Detail on the wheels is excellent with
accurate painting, and there are different tyres on the
steered and driven axles.
The cab has authentic detailing with number plates and
colour-coded door mirrors, and the interior is very good
too with DAF on the seats and steering wheel. The Torben Rafn colour scheme and graphics
produces a striking looking truck.
A detailed engine is provided under the cab which bears
the PACCAR name.
Behind the cab there is a ladder, coiled air lines and diamond
non-slip surfacing. At the
rear of the tractor the lights have plastic lenses and
the graphics on the mud flaps are good.
The trailer is highly detailed and underneath the structure is modelled very well. The
axles are fully detailed with the suspension
modelled and there is hosing running to each wheel.
At the front a couple of landing legs and extendible width
markers are present. The surface of the trailer
is top quality with an excellent representation of a timber
surface which has screw holes modelled, and the metal surfacing
is textured well.
Details along the edges of the trailer are really nice with
small graphics and tiny tie down points modelled
although they are not separate loops so cannot actually
be used. On one side there is a well detailed control
console.
The gooseneck has connectors for lines from the tractor.
The headboard is metal and a plastic tool chest is
included.
A separate pack of metal deck posts is provided
and these plug into holes in the deck edge and enough
are provided to use as an alternative to the headboard
if required. A pair of width markers can be attached at
the rear end of the trailer although these are a very tight fit
and required trimming on the review model.
The load comprises two parts, a Vestas hub and nose
cone. Both are modelled in resin/plastic and include bolt
details. The hub has temporary canvas covers
modelled on the openings and these look authentic.
Also included are some plastic palettes and elastic straps to
secure the load and the model looks all the better with
these used.
Features
The tractor unit has a linked steering of the front two
axles but with very
limited movement.
The cab tilts smoothly to a nice
angle revealing the engine.
The trailer has many features. All the axles have
effective working suspension with good movement, and the rear
self-steering axle can turn to a very good angle. At
the front the landing legs can be screwed down, and the
marker boards stowed under the gooseneck can be slid
into position. At the rear, a couple of hinged support
legs can be rotated down if required. The rear width
marker boards can be fitted or left off as desired, and
stored under the gooseneck when not in use.
The trailer bed can be extended to almost double its
length, and there is a sliding cross beam too.
For wider loads the trailer has a load floor width
adjustment and this works with tiny extension consoles
which can be pulled out and then replica beams can be
laid between them. Other configuration options are
provided by fitting or omitting the deck posts, and the
same goes for the headboard and toolbox.
The hub load can be added or left off as desired.
Quality
The overall quality of the model is very high.
The castings are very good and plastic is used
carefully.
The paintwork and graphics are of a very high standard.
Price
The model is good value given the quality, features
and detail.
Overall
This is an excellent model in Torben Rafn colours and
the details and features are outstanding.
