This version of the Mega Windmill Transporter
(MWT) uses a 7-axle Nooteboom trailer with 3-axle dolly.
The tractor is a Scania 8x4.
This model version of the MWT is in
the colours of the Scottish company
McFadyens which was founded in the 1901.
Packaging
The packaging is a
presentation Nooteboom box.
There were
no defects or missing parts on the review model.
There is no information provided about the real
vehicle. It is a pity there is no instruction sheet for
the model, as
the model is complex.
Detail
The Scania tractor looks great. The chassis
has the transmission and suspension fully modelled. The tyres have different treads
on the front and rear axle pairs, and are mounted on detailed
wheels.
The cab detail includes windscreen wipers, mirrors, and orange beacon lights, and
a nice light bar. Inside the cab
the detail is reasonable. The McFadyens graphics are
complex and excellent.
Behind the cab, the equipment tower is a cabinet with
detailed panel handles. Coiled lines are provided. Diamond plated surfacing
extends to the fifth wheel. At the back, the lights
have plastic lenses and an authentic number plate.
The Mega Windmill Transporter is made up of two
components, the jeep dolly at the front, and a
self-steering dolly at the rear.
The three axle jeep dolly has a finely modelled
chassis with suspension and steering components. Small rubber
tyres are mounted on detailed hubs with plastic wheel
arches
covering each wheel. The standard of the detailing
on the jeep dolly is very good with a tiny Nooteboom
logo impressing as do the small controls and signage.
The upper structure carrying the lift adaptor continues
the high quality. A nicely rendered generator,
hydraulics box and fuel tank are stowed at the front and
the main lift adaptor cylinder has hydraulic lines
running to it. There are excellent diamond plated
walking surfaces at the lift adaptor gantry and a tiny
remote control unit is positioned below the lift
adaptor.
The self-steering dolly is a seven axle unit and it
replicates all the high quality detailing of the jeep
dolly with the addition of a McFadyens sign at the
rear.
A cable links the front and rear adaptor although the
grade of plastic used does not seem quite so realistic. A set of
four clip-on marker signs is included.
Features
The Scania has a very limited amount of movement of the linked
steering axles.
The cab tilts forward to and can pose tilted.
The jeep dolly has steering on axle three but
the range of movement is small. Axles 1 and 2
have working suspension.
At the front there are a couple of support
legs which can be rotated and used to park the jeep dolly
when not connected to the tractor.
The lift adaptor structure has a range of horizontal
movement which is achieved by disconnecting a pin on
each side. The connection to windmill components is
adjustable through hydraulic cylinders both vertically
and fore and aft. The main cylinder has a pin hole to
set the position of the lift adaptor and pins are
included with the model.
The self-steering dolly has the same functions as the
jeep dolly. However the steering is different with the
front three axles linked together, and the rear three
axles also forming a linked group. The steering is
proportional and is very effectively represented. A
mechanism to force rotation of the upper structure is
also replicated on the model.
To display the transporter in a short coupled travelling
configuration the recommended way is to put the hooks of the rear lift adapter on top of the hooks of the front one, and the
vertical cylinder of the rear lift adapter is completely
retracted. The top part of the front lift adapter is
put down on top of the top of the rear lift adaptor to
interlock the pins.
Marker boards can be added if the trailer is carrying a
load.
Quality
This model is high quality with a high metal content,
and an appropriate use of plastic.
The paintwork and graphics of the McFadyens livery are
excellent.
Price
The model is good value.
Overall
This is another high quality Mega Windmill Transporter
which looks great in the limited edition colours of
McFadyens. It is particlarly impressive with a
suitable load.
Footnotes
This limited edition model appeared in early 2017.
