The Liebherr 1090-4.2 is a 90 tonne capacity four axle crane with a maximum lifting height of 60m on the main boom.

Packaging

The model comes in a Liebherr branded box with the model held within a pair of polystyrene trays.

There were no missing parts or defects on the review model.

There is no information on the real machine included, or instructions for the model. However, a card included with the model contains a QR code which links through to the WSI website where information relating to the model is held.  At the time of the review there was no information about the LTM 1090 available.

Detail

The model is highly detailed and underneath it has fully replicated transmission and suspension systems, and  the wheels are very good with a decent tread pattern on the tyres, and a slightly different wheel design on the non-driven axle.  The tyres also have Michelin branding in the sidewalls.

The details on the carrier are of a very high standard.  There is a loop at the front for hitching the hook whilst travelling, and the door steps are textured, with nice inset handles on the doors.   Inside the cab Liebherr is printed on the seat backs and the computer console and dashboard have graphics applied.

Behind the driving cab there are mesh grilles which look very authentic together with other parts.  Replica rubber skirts sit above each wheel, although they are a perhaps a bit too stiff.  The carrier deck has got some very nice texturing and there are fold-down ladders.  At the rear, there is a fixed ladder, light bars and number plate.

The outriggers are very good having pistons which are smooth with the screw mechanism being internal so they look realistic. They close up fully in the transport position.  Small plastic spreader plates are also provided.

The crane body continues the high level detail with hydraulic hosing and a nicely replicated cab interior with more graphics on the controls.  The cylinder jacket on the hydraulic ram is metal.

The counterweight has been made in pieces so can be attached just like the real crane, and the VarioBallast system is modelled well.  A single winch is provided.

Detailing on the boom includes two spooling drums, one of which is a separate part which has to attached using plastic putty or glue if desired to be fitted.  The boom sections are nicely decorated with a realistic thin walled profile. At the boom head the main pulleys are a solid block as they are in the hook, and this is a disappointment.

The metal folding fly jib has well formed lattice work.  A metal hook is supplied, although it looks a little too large for use on the fly jib where a single line hook would have been better.

The high detail level includes a chain to replicate the hoist cut-off, and the free end of the hoist rope slides into a tie-off shackle.  Both of these are permanently fixed however, so they look less good when the fly jib is attached.

Features

Each axle steers independently with the steering movement being good.  The model rolls in a straight line but not all wheels were fully grounded on the review model.  Steered, the model rolls but the tyres are easily fouled.

The outriggers can be extended and lowered and feature a working pinning mechanism which allows the pads to be fixed in an offset way so they are within the footprint of the crane when the outrigger beams are retracted.  The range of travel on the pistons is very good and it is easy to pose the model wheels-free.

The operator's cab can be tilted to a good angle.  It also has a pull-out foot plate.

The ladders stowed on the carrier deck can be rotated and folded down.

A good feature is that the four-piece counterweight can be displayed in various configurations, including on the carrier deck in different layouts when the crane is in transport mode.  The VarioBallast system also works well with the counterweight able to be fixed in either of two different radii.  There was an issue on the review model however that the crane could not be rotated over the full counterweight stowed on the carrier deck because of a clash.

Raising the boom is easy and it is locked in position using a grub screw in the ram jacket.  The telescopic boom sections have three locking positions.

A key is provided to operate the winch which has a nice and smooth working brake function.  However the hoist rope does not flow freely around the solid pulley blocks.

The fly jib can be attached and displayed with the swing away section open or closed.  A small guide wheel raises into position and is secured with a tiny brass nut and bolt as is the working ratchet which allows offset angles to be set.

Quality

The model is high quality with high detail and minimum plastic.

The paintwork and graphics are excellent.

Price

The model is good value.

Overall

WSI has produced another excellent model for Liebherr and it will no doubt also look great when released in coloured liveries.

Footnotes

The model was first seen at the Nuremberg Toy Fair 2019, and was released at Bauma April 2019.

Pulley block in the boom head is a solid part.
Nicely decorated boom sections.
Very good boom profile.
One notch of offset angle.  The hook would be better if it was a single line hook.
