The Liebherr
LR 1400 SX is a 400 tonne class crawler crane.
Packaging
The model comes in high quality packaging with an outer
shipping carton enclosing a large Liebherr-branded box.
The model parts are wrapped in soft paper and held
within a pair of trays.
The review model had no defects or missing parts.
The 36 page A4 build manual for the model is very
comprehensive with clear steps describing the assembly
and features, and an excellent parts list. It describes
nearly everything, although there is no information
about reeving the hooks.
Tools are supplied to assemble and operate the model.
Detail
The track frames are very detailed and tiny graphics add realism. They
also have useable lifting points. The metal track pads have a
dimpled surface and working rollers are present top and bottom.
Self-erection jacks have smooth pistons. Hydraulic
hoses run to each track frame, and also to the ground
pressure reducing jacks.
Large counterweight blocks fit to the undercarriage, and
plates fit on top.
The crane cab has wipers and lights, and the interior detail is
very good too with Liebherr printed on the seat back.
Small graphics enhance the detailing. Metal hand rails
and excellent mesh walkways surround the cab, and they
fit well.
The body has high quality paintwork and
excellent small graphics. The winches are very detailed
with motors and hydraulic hoses. Metal handrails and
walkways are very good.
The counterweight tray
and slabs have chevron graphics and the weights are
marked. The counterweight raising jacks and chains
are modelled well. Counterwight lashing can be
fitted although in practice it is extremely fiddly to
fit and very fragile and easily dislodged.
The A-frame has a
self-erection cylinder. All of the pulleys on the
model are white plastic which reflects the real crane.
Detailing at the boom foot includes an auxiliary winch
and hydraulic hoses.
The boom and jib connections use brass
nuts and bolts which work well but it would look better if they were coloured
black.
The boom and jib sections are high quality metal
lattices, and they have very nice mesh walkways.
They seem to be diecast and it would have been a major
improvement if they had been made of aluminium using
WSI's technology in this area. The boom
head has a safety cut-off chain, and the
luffing jib head has plastic dolly wheels for use during
erection. The pendant bars are nicely formed of pressed
steel.
Two hook blocks are included and they are very good
metal parts. Also included are a set of lifting
chains.
Features
The crawler tracks roll but are a little sticky and are spring loaded.
They can be detached from the undercarriage for display
as transport loads. They can also be retracted to
narrow the overall width.
Self-assembly jacks can be used to support the crane
body. The ground pressure reduction plates can be
optionally fitted or left off, and the jacks they use
can be operated.
The self-assembly cylinder on the A-frame is useable.
The ballast tray raising mechanism works and can be
posed.
The operator's cab can be rotated from the transport
position and it can also be tilted to a good angle.
It holds a pose well.
The winch drums are pinned and are potentially removable
but the pins are difficult to access.
All winches are operated by using a key. The have
positive brakes which are released by pushing in against
a spring. They work very well although there is no
compromise to the authentic appearance so accessing the
winch axles using the
key can be difficult.
The hook blocks have rotating hooks with working safety
latches.
The model is flexible and different configurations are possible.
Out of the box the boom butt is fixed to the carbody.
It can be removed to make a good transport load but it
is not as easy as it looks to remove the pins.
Quality
This model is very well made and high quality,
and it has a very high metal content.
The paint finish and graphics are high quality.
Price
It is a pricey model which reflects its size
and quality.
Overall
This is a very detailed and authentic
model of the LR 1400 SX. It is large and
impressive, and offers display flexibility. It is of
notably high quality.
Footnotes
The model first appeared at the Bauma Exhibition in 2025. |
