Realistic appearance.

The Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1 is a 6-axle all terrain crane rated at 400 tonnes.

Packaging

The model comes in a Liebherr-branded box design with the model held within a pair of clear plastic formers.

There were no defects or missing parts on the review model.

There is no information on the real machine included, and no instructions for the model, although assembly and rigging is straightforward.  A simple instruction sheet would help a novice collector.

Detail

The plastic undercarriage has some detailing of the axles and drive shafts.  The wheels have different hubs for driven and non-driven axles which is a nice detail for the scale.

At the front the driving cab is well detailed with wipers, nice painted lights, and clip-on door mirrors.  It has interior detail also.  The detail behind includes textured surfaces and deck ladders.  There are simulated black skirts above the wheels.  At the rear the carrier has a toolbox and painted lights.

The outrigger beams are two-stage plastic with chevron graphics applied.

The crane cab has good interior detail, and the rest of the crane body has small components added to give an authentic look.

The counterweight frame is a metal part with textured walking surfaces.  The counterweight blocks are individual parts with graphics applied.

The boom has a metal bottom section and there is one section able to be telescoped.  At the boom head the sheaves are all separate parts which is great for the scale.

The Y-Guy attachment is permanently fitted, and it is almost all metal and excellent given the size.

The hook is also really good with a separate sheave which enables three falls of rope to be rigged.

Features

The model rolls well in a straight line although there is no steering functionality.

The two-stage outriggers pull out and when extended the pads touch the ground.  Small spreader plates are included with the model.

The counterweight frame is a separate part which pins into position. and it can be posed on the carrier deck to replicate self-ballasting.

The frame features Vario ballasting enabling the radius of the ballast to be altered.  It works well.

The boom has one working telescopic section.  The boom can be raised and the cylinders are stiff enough to hold the boom up.

The Y-Guy arrangement is fully functional and is excellent model engineering given the scale.

The winch can be operated using a key and the hook can be reeved with different falls of rope giving flexibility.

Quality

The quality is very good for the scale with plastic used appropriately.

The paintwork and graphics are also to a high standard.

Price

The model is very good value for the detail and functionality offered.

Overall

This is a really good model in the small 1:87 scale.  The only significant compromise is the limited extension of the telescopic boom, but it still poses very well and looks great with other 1:87 models or on a model railway layout.
