The SEM 822 Track-Type Tractor is a 24 tonne machine.  The real machine is also available in a Low Ground Pressure (LGP) variant.

SEM (Shandong Engineering Machinery) is the brand name of the Caterpillar-owned Chinese equipment maker.

Packaging

The model comes in an SEM branded box which has a window.  Inside the box, the model is contained within plastic formers.

The review model had no missing parts or defects.

No information is provided about the real machine.  Although the model is marked as a SEM 822, the box is marked SEM 816, and it is understood that the same model has been made with either number.

Detail

The underside has some sime detailing.  The metal tracks are thin with bolt heads detailed.  The track frames are plastic and also include, rather oddly, the outer face of the drive sprockets.  Tiny graphics add detail.

The cab roof is metal and there are wipers on the front and rear windows.  The grab rails are metal and thin, but they are unpainted.  Inside the cab there is very good detailing including graphics for the instrument console.

Behind the cab there are filler caps.  more grab handles and SEM graphics.  The three-shank ripper assembly is metal with decent teeth.  The ram jacket is plastic with hydraulic hoses.

At the front the engine cover has small but excellent etched side grilles, and the front grille is plastic.

The blade has wear plates detailed at the bottom the top edge.   There are hydraulic line running to the main blade cylinders.

Features

The tracks are stiff to roll in the hand and are spring-loaded.  Their connections appear a little delicate and may not last with rough use.

The ripper assembly has a reasonable amount of movement.  It can be parked high or positioned with the ripper down, although the depth of penetration is shallow.

The blade can be raised and lowered and the mechanism is stiff.  The tilting function works but is spring loaded so it returns to a standard position.

Both cab doors open widely, and this feature is implemented well.

Quality

This model  is robust and well made.  It has a high metal content with plastic used appropriately, other than on the track frames where metal would have been better.

The paintwork and graphics are very good.

Price

It is good value for a big model.

Overall

This is an interesting model for the Caterpillar collector, and the big scale separates it from the usual Caterpillar models.  It is well made.
