Leader top
folded. |
|
Large model. The hoist line
should run through the pulley closed to the leader. |

|
Decent tracks
and frames. |
|
Nice rotary
drive and hydraulics. |
|
Drilling bucket
is metal. |

Graphics on the
counterweight. |

Tracks extended
for width. |

Some decent
detailing. The connection to the kelly bar is
solid rather than to an inner telescopic section. |

The XCMG
XR220 is a rotary drilling rig used for constructing
foundation piles and other underground vertical shafts.
It is in the larger scale of 1:35 which is more common
for models of Chinese construction machines.
Packaging
The model comes in a large XCMG
branded box and inside it, the model is contained within
a pair of expanded polystyrene trays.
The review model had no missing parts or defects.
Out of the box the hoist line is run from the innermost
hoist drum to the outermost guide wheel on the leader.
It should run from inner to inner.
Detail
The undercarriage is simple underneath, but there is
some detailing on the underside of the body. The
metal tracks have bolt head details and the track frames
have rollers which are part of the casting and are
non-functional. There are simple graphics on the
track frames.
The cab has plastic guards and grab rail, the window
seals are modelled and there is a door handle.
Inside, the detail is good.
The body has grilles and the panel handles detailed in the
casting are highlighted, and there are nice sharp graphics. There
is a plastic access ladder and on top there are textured
surfaces. Two hoist drums are modelled but only
one is functional so the auxiliary hoist line is not
provided.
The leader support is metal and there is pipework
detailed in the casting. The hydraulic rams have
plastic jackets which are just slightly off colour.
Stiff hydraulic hoses run to the rotary platform, and
the whole assembly is nicely detailed.
The leader is metal with plastic running tracks for the
sledge. At the leader head there are metal pulleys
and there is some more decent casting details.
Surprisingly the kelly bar is a metal tube, and it has a
partial telescopic inner, but this is not modelled
accurately at the top of the kelly bar.
The metal drilling bucket is nice, and there are cutting
teeth underneath.
Features
The tracks roll easily and are spring loaded for
tension. The track frames are also extendible so
they can be narrowed for transport, and widened to
provide a stable base for drilling.
The model rotates smoothly.
The leader can be posed in a transport position with
each end folding to reduce the transport length.
The head also tilts to reduce the headroom.
However, the kelly bar and sledge is not easily removed
so a true transport configuration cannot be displayed.
One winch is operable but only by using fingers and
thumbs so it is awkward, and in practice it would not
hold much load. It is a pity that the second winch
cannot be used to run an auxiliary hoist from the leader
head.
The sledge movement is controlled by a long hydraulic
ram and it works well enough without being able to hold
a sledge position.
The kelly bar can be rotated. Within the bottom
section there is a short telescopic piece but as it is
not connected to the hoist line it does not function in
a true way.
The bucket cutters open on a rotating plate. The
flap also opens for discharge. It was not easy to
remove the bucket from the kelly bar.
The cab door opens widely.
Quality
It has a high metal content with some plastic
used. The quality level is good.
The paintwork and graphics are
generally very good.
Price
It is very good value considering the size.
Overall
This XCMG machine looks impressive because of
the 1:35 size. With some fairly small alterations
it could also have been an excellent model with just
aspects of the functionality falling short.
